Chief Operating Officer

Location: Tacoma, Washington

Enrollment: 30,000 students

Base Salary: $155,579 to $215,390 plus benefits package

Days/Year: 260 work days; 12 months

Status: Exempt – 1.0 FTE

Reports to: Superintendent

Closing Date: April 21, 2017 (but, open until filled)

Start Date: No later than July 1, 2017

About the Position


This position plans and directs the overall operations of the Buildings and Grounds, Custodial, Facilities Planning and Construction, Purchasing, Warehousing, and Food Services departments; manages the development of all bond issue and capital fund projects approved by the Board of Directors. Other job duties may include:  serving as a consultant and member of the district negotiating teams; managing special projects; and performing related duties as assigned.  For a full description of the position responsibilities see the Job Description at and click on “About,” “Careers” and then “Administrative.”

Minimum Qualifications – Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in business administration or a related field from an accredited college or university;
  • Five years of increasingly responsible management experience in building maintenance and custodial services; and at least two of the following areas: facilities planning and construction, purchasing, warehousing, and food services;
  • At least two years of experience must be in a large school district or a similar setting; and/or
  • Any combination of experience and training which provides the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and ability required to perform the work.

The successful candidate should have knowledge of:

  • Governmental agency rules and regulations for facilities management and construction
  • Effective management and supervisory principles and practices
  • Construction and maintenance practices involved in the building operations field
  • Construction and maintenance equipment, materials, and techniques
  • Building codes and requirements
  • Architecture and engineering
  • Skilled trades and crafts fields
  • HVAC systems
  • Purchasing practices and regulations
  • Food services practices, rules, and regulations pertaining to school districts
  • Proper warehousing and distribution practices and procedures
  • Contract compliance issues as they relate to the position
  • Fiscal management practices and procedures

The successful candidate should have skills in:

  • Developing effective written documents
  • Making public presentations
  • Obtaining, clarifying, and exchanging information

The successful candidate should have ability to:

  • Make decisions and resolve complex, multifaceted problems
  • Supervise the work of assigned staff

Working Conditions

Office environment; experiences frequent interruptions; substantial requirement to work with inflexible deadlines; occasionally required to deal with distraught or angry people; required to travel to district and community sites; required to attend evening meetings; required to work extended hours as needed.
