Tensions rise over Damascus City Manager Greg Baker

About 20 people held up “I support Greg Baker” posters featuring photos of the Damascus manager Monday night before the City Council went into an hour-long closed session to discuss a personnel matter.The council agenda said the executive session was called “to consider the dismissal or disciplining of, or to hear complaints or charges brought against, a public officer, employee, staff member or individual agent who does not request an open hearing.”City officials declined to disclose details of the closed session, but the public clearly suspected the focus was on Baker.

Resident Louise Neilson initiated the silent sign display.

“We were there because of the agenda, which said they were going into executive session about employment,” Neilson said Tuesday. “We wanted to support Greg in a very public way, but silently and with dignity just to let him know and the viewing audience know that people in Damascus support the city manager.”

The city manager declined to comment after the meeting, and Baker’s attorney failed to return phone calls requesting comment.
